Use cold, filtered water to fill the reservoir to the appropriate level depending on the desired number of cups. For this guide, we are brewing on the Bonavita 1900TS coffee maker and filled the reservoir with water to the 4 cup mark to make 4 cups of coffee. To make more coffee, simply fill your coffee maker's reservoir to the water level noting how many cups you'd like to make.
Weigh or measure the amount of whole bean coffee for the desired number of cups. For this brew, we measured 7 Tablespoons or ~40 grams of light roasted, whole bean coffee (1 Tablespoon ≈ 6 grams). For making 6 cups, we recommend 10 Tablespoons or ~ 60 grams of coffee. For making 8 cups, we think 14 Tablespoons or ~80 grams of coffee is a good starting point. You may need to use more or less coffee, depending on your preferred coffee strength.
Grind the coffee to a medium-fine to medium consistency, depending on your batch size. Use a medium-fine grind for 4 - 6 cups and a medium grind for 8 or more cups. Brewing with a consistent and uniform grind size is crucial to make delicious coffee, which is why we recommend using a burr grinder.
Add the paper filter to the brew basket and rinse with hot or warm water from the sink or a kettle to remove paper taste and warm the brewer and carafe. Make sure to empty the carafe of rinse water before starting the brew cycle.
Pour the ground coffee into the filter and gently shake to settle the grounds into an even layer, then place the carafe under the spray head.
Press the ON button to initiate brewing.
Every coffee maker is different, so total brew times will vary. The brewing process should take 4 - 5 minutes for 4 Cups, 5 - 6 minutes for 6 Cups, and about 6 - 7 minutes for 8 Cups.
Remove carafe and discard the filter with wet grounds. Rinse brew basket and set aside.
Serve immediately or transfer brewed coffee to a carafe or thermos. This brewer has a stainless steel thermal carafe which will help keep the coffee hot for 1-2 hours.
